Subject Line: Can You Help?

Dear ______,

On April ___, I will be participating in Birdathon 2007, an important fundraiser for the Payne County
Audubon Society. My team is called the _________________________________, and we have ___
members who will spend much of our 24-hour counting species of birds. Our team picture is attached.

The teams that count the most species can win prizes, but that is not why we do this. We participate in
Birdathon because it is a lot of fun and because we believe that the Payne County Audubon Society is an
important community resource. The funds we raise go to support the Chapter’s many projects.

PCAS reaches out to the community: We hold interesting monthly wildlife and birding programs open to
the public the first Thursday of the month at the Stillwater Public Library. We provide a week of Nature
Camp in the summer and our very popular Nature Day in the fall. We promote research in the natural
sciences by providing scholarships, and we are working with other state chapters to establish an IBA
(Important Birding Area) in Oklahoma. Lastly, we keep our members and the community informed through
our web site and our Chapter newsletter,
Feathers.

Birdathon is similar to a walkathon. Except our team’s task is to count as many species of birds as
possible during our 24-hour period and to solicit pledges from donors. You can pledge a fixed amount, or
you can pledge so much per species. You can sign my pledge form, or you can go to our website (
www.
paynecountyaudubon.org
) to complete and mail your pledge form.

Please let me know if you can help out the _______________________________ Team!

Friend: Hello?

You:  Hi! I am calling for your help. On April ___, I will be participating in Birdathon 2007.

Friend:  What’s that?

You:  It is an important fundraiser for the Payne County Audubon Society. My team is called the
_________, and we have ___ members who will spend much of our 24-hour period counting species of
birds. I will send you a picture of our team.

Friend:  Species?

You:  (Laughing) Yes, species, such as robin or cardinal, not every bird.

Friend: Why are you doing that?

You:  The teams that count the most species can win prizes, but that is not why we do this. We
participate in Birdathon because it is a lot of fun and because we believe that the Payne County Audubon
Society is an important community resource. The funds we raise go to support the Chapter’s many
projects.

Friend: I’ve heard of Audubon but I’ve never donated to it.

You:   I wish you would consider a donation now. Our Chapter reaches out to the community:  We hold
interesting monthly wildlife and birding programs open to the public the first Thursday of the month at the
Stillwater Public Library. We provide a week of Nature Camp in the summer and our very popular Nature
Day in the fall. We promote research in the natural sciences by providing scholarships, and we are

our members and the community informed through our web site and our Chapter newsletter,
Feathers.

Friend:  Wow! I never knew that. So what exactly is a Birdathon?

You:  Birdathon is similar to a walkathon. Except our team will count as many species of birds as possible
during our 24-hour period.

Friend: OK. I’ll help. What do I need to do?

You:  You can pledge a certain amount per species (I usually see about __ species) or you can pledge a
flat amount. You can go to the Payne County Audubon website (www.paynecountyaudubon.org) and
print, complete, and mail the pledge Form. Or I can stop over and you can sign my form. I will collect the
money as soon as I know how many species our team has counted. I must have all the money collected
by May 14 in order that we both qualify for prizes.

Friend: I’ll just do it on-line. Good luck with the event. I’ll be anxious to hear how many birds you see.

You:  Thanks so much! After I collect your donation, you will get an official thank you letter for Payne
County Audubon. Hey, you should think about joining—it is really a fun organization!

Friend:  I think I will!
